Slippers are usually worn inside the house.  They are worn for comfort and because they are lightweight and easy to move around in.  The materials used to make slippers are usually terry cloth, soft leather, or felt, although they can be made from rubber or plastic for pool areas or other wet areas.  They can have treaded soles and are thin and flexible allowing the wearer to walk around on wet or slippery surfaces.  Slippers can come in slip on design with no heel for easier access or as a whole shoe with top access to the feet.  There are many unusual sounding names for slippers.  They are known as flip-flops or sandals in areas like Hawaii and the Philippines.  They are called baffies in Scotland.
